Planning a Perfect Thanksgiving Road Trip

Thanksgiving is a special holiday that brings people together to give thanks and celebrate their blessings. Relatives gather round to enjoy pumpkin pie and spend quality time together. If you’re going to be taking a road trip to see grandma, escape the daily grind, or to celebrate somewhere warm, here are a few tips to prepare for a safe journey.

Prepare your vehicle for long-distance travel. Check your car’s wiper blades, fluids, radiator, brakes, battery, and lights to ensure your car is up for the mileage ahead.

Check tire pressure and tread. The slick fall roads mean that our tires need to have plenty of grip to be able to stop in time. Topping up the air pressure can also ensure you have optimum fuel efficiency.

Drive safely near large trucks. Remember that trucks are heavy and take longer to make a complete stop, so avoid cutting quickly in front of them. Also, be aware of truck blind spots. If you can’t see the truck driver in his or her mirrors, then the truck driver can’t see you.

Plan ahead. Expect to encounter traffic that’s worse than normal. To make holiday travel easier on yourself, aim to leave earlier than everyone else. Wednesday and Sunday are peak times to travel over the Thanksgiving period. If possible, travel on Tuesday and Saturday to avoid the rush.

Keep your eyes on the road. Distracted driving is a major cause of accidents on the road. Even just two seconds of distraction doubles the chances of an accident. Remember to put your cell phone away, keep the kids entertained, and set up the GPS before starting the car.
