Keeping Your Pets Safe While in the Car

For many animal lovers across the nation, the family pet is just that – part of the family. We all know that we should buckle up when in a vehicle and that young children may need special car seats. But what about animals? The safety of pets is less widely publicized, yet the results can be devastating if something goes wrong while driving with an animal onboard. Take a look at these top safety tips to consider when traveling in a car with your pet.

Prep your pet for the long trip. Get your four-legged friend ready by taking him or her on a series of short journeys first to gradually get used to being in the vehicle. If you’re going to be traveling across state lines, bring along your pet’s rabies vaccination record.

Keep them secure in a crate or carrier. Your pet needs to be restrained while in the car – not only to make sure they don’t nudge your arm while driving but for their safety if they are in a crash. The crate should be large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down, and turn around in. Secure this crate so it won’t slide or shift when braking.

Bring a pet-friendly travel kit. When traveling with your pet, you should always carry their water bowl, water, food, toys, any medication they may need, and documents. Remember to regularly stop to allow your pet to go to the toilet, stretch their legs, and get fresh air.

Never leave them alone in a parked vehicle. Avoid returning to your car with a broken window from a good Samaritan. Never leave your pet alone in the car. On a warm day, the car can quickly turn into a furnace. In cold weather, the car can act as a refrigerator, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.
