Equifax is a consumer credit bureau that collects financial, credit and other data on every U.S. consumer. It has names, birth dates, social security numbers, drivers license numbers, bank account numbers, mortgage data, payment history and a myriad of personal details. This information is accessed on a routine basis by retailers, banks, credit card companies, mortgage lenders, car dealerships, employers and others to make decisions about the stability and credit worthiness of U.S. consumers.

Equifax announced in a press release dated 9/7/17, that criminals exploited a U.S. website application to gain access to consumer files. Based on the company’s investigation, the unauthorized access occurred from mid-May through July 2017 and may impact 143 million U.S. consumers. Equifax has established a dedicated website, to help consumers determine if their information has been potentially impacted, to sign up for credit monitoring and identity theft protection. A call center has been set up to assist consumers at 866-447-7559.

CNN Money published an article on 9/10/17 with helpful information and they provided links to various websites. The article is: “There are 5 things you can do right now if you’re worried about the Equifax hack”
