Whether you have a trip booked or are still deciding where your next adventure should be, you’ll want to take extra safety precautions. Countries and cities around the world continue to experience violence and crimes. Being a tourist in an unfamiliar place can be daunting, so it’s essential to remain vigilant of your surroundings and be safe.

Before you book your next trip, spend a bit of time considering the local political climate, economic environment, crime activity, and weather concerns of the location.

Secondly, review these safety tips to bear in mind when you and your family are traveling:

  • Adopt a neutral dress code and avoid offensive items of clothing. Try not to look like a tourist. Research what locals wear and choose the same style. Looking like a tourist attracts unwanted attention.
  • Rent a car that is plain and standard instead of a flashy or a luxury vehicle.
  • Stay at a local hotel instead of at an American chain.
  • Choose a neutral luggage tag instead of using your flashy corporate tag.
  • Avoid clubs that are tourist traps as well as expatriate hangouts.
  • When possible, travel with an experienced local who knows the area, especially when shopping for souvenirs.
  • If you enjoy a morning run, ask the concierge about the safest time and route in the area.
