With the first half of 2016 being the warmest half-year ever recorded, taking these heat safety tips into consideration could save a life.

In recent years, extreme heat has caused more deaths than all other natural disaster events, even floods. At most at risk from the effects of heat are our children, senior citizens and pets. Fortunately, there are some simple steps that families can take to keep children and others safe from the extreme heat of the summer.

Heat Safety Tips

  1. Seek shelter in cool places. Air conditioning is the best form of protection against heat-related illness. If air conditioning is not available spend time at the mall, a public library or cooling stations in your community.
  2. NEVER leave children, the elderly or pets in parked cars.  Automobiles trap heat causing the temperature to increase rapidly. A person or pet that’s left inside a car is at risk from heat stroke and/or death, even if you’ve cracked open the windows.
  3. Remember to drink plenty of fluids to keep your body hydrated. Your body uses a lot of energy and water to keep your body temperature at a constant level.  Replenishing with fluids is a must.
  4. Stay informed of your weather. Watch TV or visit the Internet for weather-related updates that include heat warnings and local information about where to go and what to do.
