Healthy Tips to Avoid Colds, the Flu, and the Coronavirus While Traveling

When you’re traveling, there’s nothing worse than feeling run down and being ill. Being sick while traveling is not only a miserable experience, but it also means that you can get others sick by passing on harmful germs. If you still plan on traveling, be sure you take note of these tips to help you stay healthy.

  • Use disinfectant – Get into the habit of washing your hands often. When running water and soap aren’t available, opt for hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes. Wipe down plane seats, tray tables, and hotel rooms with wipes, and sanitize your hands before eating or touching your face.
  • Pack a first aid kit – A small first aid kit can be useful when you’re in a bind. Carry a thermometer, Band-Aids, Tylenol, nose drops, anti-diarrheal pills, decongestants, antacid tablets, allergy pills, antibiotics, and anything else you think you may need.
  • Stay hydrated – It’s important to stay hydrated, especially during cold and flu season. Avoid drinking alcohol and caffeine because these are diuretics that will dehydrate you. Instead, fill up on water and juice.
  • Rest – When possible, get at least eight hours of sleep every night. Although this can be difficult to obtain while traveling, lack of sleep can weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to catching a cold. If you feel under the weather, rest and stay home if possible.
  • Know your risk – If you have ongoing medical issues, consult your physician for the healthy travel tips that are specific to your condition. Learn which over-the-counter medications are safe to take without interacting with your current prescriptions.
