Be aware that in-flight theft is on the rise so that you can protect yourself.

This is something that most of us really don’t think much about, but you should always beware of in-flight theft on airplanes.

If you’re following your airline’s advice, you are most likely carrying your electronics and valuables in your carry-on and not in your checked bag. Along with your passport and cash, these personal, small bags are a thief’s dream stash of loot. With recent news highlighting multiple thefts on flights into Hong Kong (should not say this), before you travel is the time to ensure that you do not fall victim to this crime.

Keep Your Valuables Close

If there is no space in the overhead compartment above your seat, stash your bag underneath the seat in front of you instead of putting it in a compartment eight seats behind you. It is wise to keep your passport, important documents, cash, and jewelry with you at all times. If you absolutely must put it in the overhead compartment, choose to put it in a compartment in front of you so that you can keep a close eye on it.

Lock It

Thieves will quickly be deterred once they see your bag is zipped up and locked with a sturdy padlock. Keep the key safe, and ensure that the lock cannot quickly be ripped off.

Be Aware

As much as is possible, stay alert and be aware of what’s going on around you. Keep important items where you can see them, and if you notice someone tampering with another person’s belongings while they are sleeping or otherwise distracted, alert the flight attendant immediately.

Fortunately, you can avoid being a victim of theft by staying alert and protecting your belongings. Some passengers do not realize they have been robbed until it is too late and they are in their hotel room. If you see suspicious activity, alert the flight attendants.
