LAPD-Approved Halloween Safety Tips

Keep safe this fright night with these Halloween safety tips.

Halloween, celebrated on October 31st in the United States, is one of the best nights of the year. Children and adults get to dress up, eat candy, and enjoy all things spooky. From trick-or-treating to haunted houses and scary movies, this holiday never fails to surprise (and spook!) us. Nevertheless, this fun-filled holiday should be kept as safe as possible for children, parents, and adults alike.

Luckily, there are some essential things you can do to keep crime and harm at bay this holiday. Check out the top safety tips, approved by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

Children:

  • Trick-or-treat during daylight hours, accompanied by an adult.
  • Never enter a stranger’s home or accept rides from people they do not know.
  • For teens trick-or-treating with friends, set an early, strict curfew.
  • Look in all directions before crossing the street.
  • Use designated sidewalks.
  • Only knock on familiar homes who have their porch lights on.

Candy:

  • Examine candy before children eat it to ensure there are no pieces that may have been tampered with.
  • All fruit should be cut and closely inspected before eating.
  • Only give wrapped homemade treats to children you know.

Costumes:

  • Costumes should not drag on the ground as this could be a tripping hazard.
  • Masks should not be worn if they impair vision.
  • Children should wear comfortable, properly fitting shoes on the night.
  • All costumes should be made of light-colored fireproof material.
  • Children should carry a flashlight and have reflective material on their costume or treat bag.
  • Props such as toy swords should be made of pliable material.
