September is National Preparedness Month and it aims to educate Americans to respond to all types of crises.
National Preparedness Month is a time in which you can prepare yourself, and those in your care, for all types of emergencies including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks. Disaster can strike within the blink of an eye in communities just like yours, even to innocent people like yourself. We know the suddenness of tornado outbreaks, river and flash floods, catastrophic earthquakes, devastating tsunamis, and even water main breaks and power outages can have an adverse impact on your community for days, even weeks. The best way to be prepared for these sometimes unpredictable disasters is to be educated on how to react to them.
Emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time. It is important to understand potential risks of your area.
What You Can Do
- Bookmark weather.gov to stay informed on local weather patterns and severe weather warnings.
- Wireless Emergency Alerts can help warn you of any tornados, floods, or fire warnings in your area.
Take Action
- Prepare a disaster supply kit with three days of food and water for each individual in your care.
- Create a Family Emergency Plan to facilitate communication during an emergency.
- Purchase a NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Weather Radio.
Be an Example
Being a positive influence on your community by sharing your preparedness story, and the steps you took to get you ready will aid others. Let your friends and family know that you’re prepared for any emergency, and they should do the same; trouble could be around the next corner. Humans follow by example: if they see one person do something, they’ll be more inclined to do likewise. When more people start preparing, it’ll lead to a positive chain reaction in which everyone in your community will be ready for the worst.
