Be wary of teen drivers and stay safe on the road this summer with these tips.

Summer is here. Temperatures are warmer, the days are longer, the kids are out of school, and more teens are on the roads. It is always important to use caution while driving, but especially critical between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Here are a few facts about teen drivers so that you’re better prepared to stay safe on the road this summer.

Teen Driving Statistics

  • According to AAA, during the 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day, the rate of deadly crashes involving teens spikes. It’s reported that such crashes account for 10 deaths every day in the United States.
  • Driving distractions account for the majority of teen crashes. A study conducted by AAA found that these crashes resulting from distractions accounted for 60 percent of all teen accidents. These distractions include things such as talking on the phone, texting while driving, goofing around with passengers and eating while driving.

Tips to Promote Safe Driving

  • When it comes to staying safe on the road, education is key. Talk to your teens about the importance of safe driving. Establish written rules with them.  Your teen should read and sign the rules agreeing to your terms when driving. If the rules are violated be sure to clarify the consequences.  Driving is a privilege not a right.
  • Stress the dangers of distracted driving. It’s important that your teen is aware of common distractions so they’re better able to avoid them.
