Safety Tips for Preparing Thanksgiving Dinner

It is time to start planning a memorable Thanksgiving dinner.  Here are some helpful tips:

  • One of the most damaging mistakes an individual can make when preparing Thanksgiving dinner is washing the turkey. When you wash any poultry, you are spreading pathogens and germs. Additionally, any splattering can cause harmful pathogens to embed themselves on the countertops. If you need to wash off your turkey, simply do so with a damp cloth instead.
  • As hectic as the kitchen can get during the holidays, it is extremely important that you do not mix cutting boards and utensils when it comes to raw meats in order to avoid cross-contamination. The grooves and ridges of cutting boards must be cleaned with more than just warm water and a sponge. In order to really clean a cutting board, you need to use bleach or throw it in the dishwasher.
  • If this is your first time cooking Thanksgiving dinner, you may be worried about cooking the turkey to the perfect temperature. Once the turkey reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit or 74 degrees Celsius, you are in the clear! Make sure to check multiple parts with your digital, tip-sensitive thermometer, not just the legs which tend to cook faster.
