Learn some of the best practices on how to stay safe in crowds.

There’s something to be said for safety in numbers, but when you are in an area that is jam-packed with people, stalls, and vehicles, it can seem overwhelmingly dangerous. When you’re attending busy sporting events, concerts, festivals, and other large gatherings, it’s important to know how to protect yourself, your family, and your money in a crowd. Check out how to stay safe in crowds below!

Don’t get injured:

  • Make sure that you know where all exits are located.
  • If the crowd seems to be getting out of control or you’re feeling claustrophobic, don’t hesitate to leave.
  • Don’t wear loose clothing or accessories that can be pulled and tangled easily.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes with the laces tightened to prevent tripping and others from standing on your feet.
  • Walk around crowds rather than push through them.

Prevent theft:

  • Try to carry only your I.D., cash, and one credit card, whether that’s in your wallet or pocket.
  • Carry important items in your front pockets or in a bag wrapped around you.
  • Wrap a rubber band around your wallet, so it’s more difficult to remove from your pocket.
  • Use a bag with a zipper, button, or clasp closure.

Stay together:

  • If you came in a group, stay in a group.
  • Keep a diligent eye on your children.
  • Pick a meet up spot with your group if you become separated.
  • Remind your children to avoid strangers, and help them to identify police officers and officials to go to if they are lost.
  • Give your child a written note of your contact name and number in case you both get separated from each other.
