Thanksgiving Cooking & Travel Safety Tips

Use these safety tips to protect your cooking and travel this Thanksgiving.

With Thanksgiving coming up in just a few weeks, it’s time to start planning for this major holiday. Whether you’ll be driving or flying to someone else’s home for the meal or cooking up Thanksgiving dinner yourself, there are a few safety tips you should keep in mind.

  • Avoid Roadway Regrets: Over the holiday, the roads will get busier. Avoid a headache by leaving with plenty of travel time to accommodate the extra traffic. If you’re traveling with kids, bring lots of entertainment options for them so they won’t distract you from the road. Also, make sure you consider that there will likely be lots of families on the road. Never drink and drive or text and drive!
  • Cook Carefully: Test your smoke alarms before the big day. While cooking Thanksgiving dinner, never leave the stovetop unattended. Also, make sure you keep kids away from hot surfaces and dishes, knives, and electric appliances. It’s a good idea to find an alternate to frying your turkey, too, since this cooking method causes numerous house fires each Thanksgiving.
  • Take Plane Precautions: If you’re going to be flying somewhere for Thanksgiving, plan for a busy airport and allow extra time for parking, security, and finding your gate. Also, get your flu shot before you fly to avoid catching illness during your time in the air.
