Over the past few months, we have needed to quickly adapt to new terminology such as social distancing, quarantine, and isolation that have quickly become the new norm. To help, we’ve rounded up the essential tips of what you need to know.

The Difference Between Social Distancing, Quarantine, and Isolation

Social distancing

Social distancing is a way to keep people from interacting closely or frequently enough to spread an infectious disease. Events may be cancelled and communal places such as churches and malls may be closed.

Quarantine

Quarantine separates and restricts the movement of people who have been exposed to a contagious disease to see if they become sick. It lasts long enough (anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks) to ensure the person has not contracted an infectious disease.

Isolation

Isolation prevents the spread of an infectious disease by separating people who are sick from those who are not.

Taking Care of Your Health During COVID-19

  • Stay up to date on the latest news but avoid watching or listening to reports 24/7 since this tends to increase anxiety and worry
  • Only read credible sources of information (e.g. CDC and WHO)
  • If you are self-isolating, work with your local community to arrange for groceries and toiletries to be delivered to you as needed
  • Work with your employer to reduce financial stress by understanding your situation and options
  • Contact your utility providers to explain your situation and request alternative bill payment arrangements if needed
  • Stay in touch with loved ones through phone calls, video calls, and texts
  • Maintain your health by eating well, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and washing your hands regularly
