Stay safe while traveling abroad.

Traveling abroad is exciting. It’s an opportunity to experience new places and cultures. However, it’s important to take a few precautions while traveling to ensure that your trip runs smoothly. Here are a few travel tips to help you stay safe while traveling internationally.

Be Prepared.

Before you head off on your trip, make sure that you have all the documents that you need. Keep paper copies with you, and make digital copies of your travel documents so that you can access them if they get lost or damaged. Email yourself your itineraries, hotel reservations, immunization records, passports, flight information, and more so that you’re well prepared.

Get the Necessary Vaccines.

When traveling abroad, it’s important that you’re healthy enough to travel. Visit your doctor before your trip to check your health and get any necessary vaccinations.  Additionally, you can access information on the Centers for Disease Control’s website to determine what immunizations that you may need for your travels.

Keep Valuables Safe.

When traveling, it’s a good idea to leave valuables at home. Only take the necessities so that you can reduce the risk of losing things. Make use of your hotel safe and keep items such as your passport locked away while you’re out and about.  Ask the hotel for a new password to the safe prior to storing items.  Often times, the password to the hotel safe in your room is known by others and should be changed.  While it may be tempting to carry everything together while traveling, don’t keep all your valuables together. Instead, try to separate various items such as credit cards, documents and cash so that you’re not at a loss if your backpack, purse or travel pouch are stolen or lost.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings.

It’s important to be aware of your environment no matter where you are in the world. However, it’s especially true when exploring a new place. Pickpocketing is common around the world, and tourists are often easy targets. Avoid carrying things in your back pockets and shift the items to front pockets.  Do not use carrying bags that are not closeable. Use a travel pouch that is secured around your upper body underneath clothing.

Review Travel Insurance Plans.

Many different insurance companies offer Travel Insurance.  Information can be found online or by contacting your insurance agent.  Generally, insurance provides coverage for trip cancellation, travel delays, lost luggage and medical emergencies.  Travel Insurance is a good resource when traveling abroad, taking a cruise or a trip with multiple destinations.
