A teen driver may not have the experience they need to stay safe, and statistics prove thisAdding a teen to your automobile insurance policy is costly.

Having a teen driver in the household can be a fun and nerve racking experience. Getting a driver’s license is a milestone for your children and also a rite of passage.  For parents it is time to navigate your way through many hoops, keeping them safe and also insured is vitally important.  Contact your insurance agent prior to your teen getting behind the wheel of a car to have them added to your automobile policy as an insured driver.

When should I consider coverage for my teenager? It depends on which state you live in. Some require new drivers to be added as soon as they receive their permit, others will have you wait until they get their official driver’s license.

Do they need their own individual policy? Most parents opt for adding the teen onto their auto policy. Parents can take advantage of policy discounts (e.g., multivehicle discounts), and also carry higher liability limits that might not be available to a youthful driver if they were able to obtain their own insurance policy.  Many parents keep their children on their policy until they move out of the house.  Finally, when your child goes away to college talk to your insurance agent about the pros and cons of removing them from the auto policy, while they are away at school, and not driving.

Are there any discounts available for them? Yes! If getting into a good college isn’t enough of an incentive, perhaps saving money on insurance will. They may also take a defensive driving course, which will offer policy discounts with some insurance carriers.   A good student discount is available with if the student carries a good grade point average.

To protect you and your teen let’s be sure a comprehensive auto insurance policy is in place. For all of your insurance coverage questions, please contact your team at Hoffman Brown Company in Sherman Oaks, California. We are happy to be of service!
