Does Your Car Have Airbags That Won’t Inflate?
No matter how safe you can drive, accidents happen. When they do happen, you want to have peace of mind that airbags will inflate before a collision impact. Currently, investigators have found that air bags may not inflate in vehicles made by Toyota, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, and Fiat Chrysler from 2010 to 2019. These vehicle models were included in the airbag probe, which was launched by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
This means that the airbags can fail in a crash, most likely because of unwanted electrical signals produced by the crash itself that can disable an airbag control circuit housed in the passenger compartment. The official documents state that the electrical signals can damage the control circuit.
NHTSA has upgraded the airbag probe from a preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis, which is one step closer toward seeking recalls for the affected makes and models. At time of writing, only Hyundai, Kia and Fiat Chrysler have sent out recalls. Unfortunately, this comes too late for some motorists. Four deaths may have been the result of Hyundai-Kia vehicles and three in Fiat Chrysler cars. If you own one of the listed vehicles, please keep an eye out for recalls and get your vehicle booked with your dealership as soon as possible.
